My Story
Hey I'm Maddi! I'm a 28 year old baker from south London who officially started Maddi's Cakes around 7 years ago, although my baking journey started when I was 16.
Being the eldest of 4, I would always watch my mum bake our birthday cakes each year from scratch. Mum didn't particularly like decorating the cakes so one year I decided to help her decorate my youngest sisters cakes and I absolutely loved it! I also thought it was so great at the time haha, we all have to start somewhere right?
Around the ages of 16 I was struggling a lot mentally and felt like baking was my escape. After years of crippling anxiety, a rising number of panic attacks and massive amounts of pain nobody could explain, I was diagnosed with Endometriosis.
A little bit of insight, Endo is essentially a disease in which tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows in other places, most commonly the ovaries and fallopian tubes. The tissue can act a bit like a spiderweb and makes it harder for the organs to move freely and can cause pain, which for me happens to be a lot.
I spent a lot of time in bed unable to move because of the pain, and honestly my mental health severely suffered. One of the only things that helped, was baking. I threw myself into baking and creating for all family and friends, and realised it took my mind off of the pain, the anxiety and the sadness.
As things started to get busier, we had to build a log cabin in the garden of my parents house to work from as I was taking up too much space in the family kitchen. Gradually my sister started to help me with the social media side of things to help the business grow and start building a client base. (But shout out to my lifelong bestie, who before my sister had to nag me every week to take pictures so she could post them on facebook haha!)
Now my sister works for me full time, cake decorating and still running the Instagram and Facebook account. If you ever place an order, 95% of the time, Cas is responding to you.
Since having my gorgeous son in 2020, my mum has also joined us part time. I can no longer bake every day, so mum has taken that job role back! And I am the sole baker and decorator of all the biscuits.
We've dipped in and out of filming the creations, and our friend Jessica has spent many hours in the kitchen with us, a lot more recently to help us film videos for Tik Tok which we love and wish we had more time for!
The next step for us was to create this website, and blog: a place where I can share my stories, tips and tricks and help anyone who's also on their own Endo journey. (And of course order some tasty treats!)
I absolutely love what I've created and the happiness we can spread with our bakes and even happier I am able to do it with my friends and family, without whose support I wouldn't have been able to get this far and still be able to call this my job.
Baking has helped save my sanity, I hope there's some peace you can find on here too.
